Well, I think I had something to say. Maybe. But I'm really tired, so I don't think I'm gonna make much of a post this eve. I know I always TALK about getting in bed early, but I think tonight I really WILL. Anyways, been really kinda happy since last night - ontop of everything else listed in yesterday's post, my sister and I had a nice chat, and she said I was one of her best friends. ^_^;; I'm such a sap, I know.

Anyways, I burned some CDs tonight - my friend Oli and her Roomie asked me to make them a couple discs, so I did. I suppose I'll end off with a listing of those CDs, just cause I can.

I like. I like a lot. ::big huge anime eyes::

^_^ I'm glad you approve.
As far as my CDs go, I like to think of myself as an artisan - I'm quite proud of my work, especially when there's a flow. I also like going for a theme in my CDs. With these, there were a few requests, so a theme would've been hard, but I did try to get a flow going.

If I had to pick my favorite ten songs off these CDs - Pretty Enough, Superman, My December, Chop Suey, Moved By You, Castles Burning, Anarchy, Pretty, Stay, Castle Walls, and Airport Song. Those are great, and I suggest them to EVERYONE. Get them. Now. Go! ^__^

Same here ... music is one of my (very few) true passions ... right up there with the study of stars/planets (which I'm pretty passionate about). MixCDs are a true artform in and of themselves for the mixer behind them... to get that flow of songs and theme and overall feeling you're going through down onto a CD and through music... it's a high that cannot be honestly explained (at least, for me!). It doesn't often happen, but when it does... hellooooo nurse. It's a ver proud, happy, 'I finally get it!' sort of feeling.

I like that you go quote-unquote "all over the place" ... meaning that you don't JUST like loud/alt. music, or religious music, or quiet music, or pop music. You seem to like a little of almost everything.... and so many people DON'T. It's like they get stuck in this funk of ONLY listening to one type of music. It's almost as if they don't allow themselves to experience new things. It makes me sad because... well, what's the point of loving music if you can't open yourself to at least trying to love a little of it all? It's almost saying something about life and how we treat people... and it makes me sad.

I think if you and I were ever in a car, we'd have a blast asking each other who sang what. ^____^ I'm pretty darn good at the game, if I say so myself.... and it's one of my favourite things to do (although I keep it in check with "the new people" ... such as, I don't go asking Beth or Megan or people I know wouldn't really like me "grilling" them... although that's hardly what I do! Sheesh... why not tattoo "Vampire" on me or something, if everyone thinks I'm gonna bite them?!).

Tra la la la la la la. ^___^ You don't mind my comments way too much sometimes, right? 'Cause I can stop. Really.

Life Without Music Is A Mistake

Dude, I SO know what you're talking about with those MixCDs - that's rather all I ever listen to, anymore; I've rather been spoiled by my Computer, I think, and my 1868 mp3s. But yeah, it's so awsome when a CD just falls together, you know? A few of my older CDs (like Not English and Car Trip II) are a bit uninspired, but other (like Status: Blank and Impulse) I'm really fond of, and on a number of occations I've had CDs that were just inspired - literally, I was burning a CD for one reason, and then I start listening to it, and it's totally perfect for another situation that I never expected to come up (09.20.02 12:39 and A New CD, I think, were like that).

^_^;; Yeah, I like to think I have rather ecclectic tastes. I grew up on Oldies, and I still feel a strong pull from my Roots, though not as much now that I'm away from my Parent's. Additionally, as a child of the '80s, that style is one of my favorites - which probably opened the doors to some of the weirder music I listen to (as well as some of the darker, considering Duran Duran and Dunkan Sheik, who I believe are '80s, yes?). I'm also big into Classical Rock, as per Savatage and Styx, and if you put a spin on those you come up with Queensryche's style, too. I am (I like to believe) a religious man, and my years in Youth Group opened me up to alot of Christian bands that I like (Third Day and Jars of Clay), and further into general religious-oriented music (Feel The Nails and Via Dolarosa). I'm also a hopeless Romantic, in the sence of the Romantic Period, not trashy romance Novels, which leads to my fondness for In The End and My December among others. Additionally (and I think this plays into my love for Techno/Industrial and Classical Rock in limited and different ways) I have a love for strict instrumental music, particularly Piano and Strings music. I can blame almost everything else (including, actually, Jars of Clay) on a girl - admittedly, a paire of pretty eyes has gotten me into Country and even caused me to tolerate (on a limited level) Rap.

DUDE, I used to be SO GOOD at that, you don't know! Back as far as 6th grade, I prided myself on pegging both the Name and Artist of a song withing the first bar of music! And I was pretty damn good, too, if I do say so. When me and my brothers used to get together, we'd put some music on and test eachother, back and forth calling who did which song, and ragging on whoever got stumped. Infact, it became standard procedure for me to "grill" The Rats whenever we were in the Car - Josh did admirably well, and Gene wasn't far behind, but we never could get Tim to care enough. Since comming out here to College and literally drowning myself in mp3s I've lost a bit of my edge, though I like to imagine I could get my shots in it I tried. ^_____^

LOL! Mel, I love your comments - I love ANY comments, you know that. You're MORE than welcome to say whatever you want whenever you want, relevant to the subject at hand or not. ^_____^

I've wante a chance to come up to say this, because all my Chalupa friends say it... so...

Word!

Teeheeeee. ^________^ It's the simple things in life, really it is. ::giggles::

... I think what got me into hearing all kinds of music was the fact that I often had to ride in a car with people who had very different music tastes than myself. I got so damn SICK of hearing everyone else complain for hours about how they didn't like this or that (my GOSH how it grated on my nerves)... and so, generally, I figured that was not I wanted to become. Thus, I grew to like a little of it all... just not all the time (you have to agree that music is an outlet of mood most of the time... and when you're angry, you don't listen to sad songs, and when you're happy you don't listen to rage songs, etc). ^__^; I find Senta very sad for the fact that she considers all I listen to ... well, to be "boring" to the point of not telling me... but not just shutting up either. Where as the only music she listens to is loud, screaming alternative songs that - while I like, a great lot of the time - cannot listen to 24/7.

It almost hurts my feelings when she learns that some of my songs (esp "Gravity of Love" by Enigma and "Clubbed to Death" by Robb D... she loved both those) were really worthwhile and interesting and - GASP! - not only did I like them (love them, worship them, drool upon them) ... she had never heard of them and - GASP! - liked them too. One should never pass someone's music style off as "boring" without at least trying to understand why one likes such music, ne? I may not love country music like some people I know.... but sometimes it's really worthwhile and good and people who put it down all the time... well, don't they have anything better to do?

Like, uhm, listen to the music they like? ^__^;; (I don't mean to sound harsh, but gosh... in my social circle... I could either be worshiped or killed for liking certain music styles. It's insane and a little too radical - and I'm not talking in a good way!)

OH! On a somewhat related note, I went and got that "Pretty Enough" song. It's really lovely, Andrew. If you like that, you should try "Fade" by Lori Carson... it's pretty in (what I'd like to call) that same sort of way. Thanks for the music rec ... I love hearing new stuff, as always. ^_______^

And as for being spoiled... I thought I was going to DIE when Navi wasn't burning CDs. I'm not close to kidding. I almost never listen to anything but Mixes... either my own or the rare few that people have sent me over the years. They are really such a blessing.

Well, that, and my MP3 collection. No wonder Navi is so fussy... I overload the poor thing with so much music and videos that 28 of 34 gigs are completely taken. ::crashes to the floor, anime-style:: .... yeah. Ouch.

Kaaaay.... done now.... ::hides::

I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden...

::Nods:: I know what you're saying about people griping about Music - seems to me that's what Louis and Jesse were doing, if only limiting it to genres. ::Shrugs:: I imagine that if I didn't like any given song/arist I would let you know - but at the same time, that doesn't come up all that often. ^_^ I can say there are a few things that turn me off from a song - the two biggest being gratuitous cussing and screaming at any point in the song. Of course, the fact that I like "One Step Close" by Linkin Park calls the lie in the latter - but there's always an exception.

And yes, Pretty Enough is an AWSOME song! I LOVE her voice, absolutely adore it. And get this - I never would have found her if not for my roomie. See, mostly (and I DO mean mostly) she's a Country Singer, even if you wouldn't know it from that song. infact, most of her songs are MUCH too Country for my tastes, but that one... Simply amazing. ^_^

Hee hee, I have so many MixCDs, I think I'm starting to lose them and not even realize it! ><* I'm thinking, since I've wanted to do it for a while, that I might write down Track Lists and paste them up here on LJ for all my CDs. The problem is - I'm REALLY bad with Track Lists, and that means NONE of my CDs have any. So I would have to go through each and recall the Title and Artist. ^_^ Whee.
As far as MP3s go - I have two sets right now. First are the songs that are set - I've already listened through them and I know they're keepers. This set is the 1868 I keep taling about, and it takes up about 7.22Gigs on my computer. The second set is constantly in flux, and that's my Kazaa folder. These are songs which I download en masse, and then dig through systematically, deleting what I don't like and moving what's good into my Library folder. Right now it's at about 160 mp3s, but a couple days ago it had over 220. Of course, this is all due to the fact that Kazaa has been really nice to me lately. And, of course, with everything on my computer, I wouldn't be able to do this if not for the extra 80Gig Hard Drive I bought recently. Oh yes, feel the might of the Mighty Joy. ^_^;;

Oh, squeal.

Excellent. Just excellent. I like the dabbles of Jim, Concrete Blonde, and They Might Be Giants. The Radiohead's pretty good, too. Hell - it's ALL good!

And I agree with Mel - one shouldn't box themselves in to one particular type of music. Then you just miss far too much wonderful stuff from all across the board. ::giggles:: There's even some emo in there, aww...how weepy. ^_^

Date: 2002-10-24 09:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com
^_^ Yes, Oli (who gets the Ohverin CD) specifically asked for Fake Plastic Rae, They Might Be Giants, and some "I-was-dumped" music. Cait (who gets Vigor) wanted some Bouncy stuff (which I was a bit hard-pressed to find, I fear - my bouncy music almost tastes sarcastic, most of the time) and also wanted some Angry and "I-was-dumped" music. Every Silver Lining... is my own doing - they both said they liked my music, and it was my attempt too see how dark I could get without them running away, but I don't know if I really got all that dark (which is why I titled it as I did - it's a "light" kind of dark).

I have Emo music in there? ^_^;; That's my biggest failing, I think - I don't know how to pick out genres. I can understand "Angry" and "Dark" and "Happy." I can get moods, and I can also get, like, Classical Rock and punk (I think, sorta) and I can pick out Rap and Country - but you start talking about Industrial vs Tance, or Emo vs Punk, or Alternative vs Pop - and then I'm out of my element. ^_^;; Louis and his friend Jesse did a good job of running me around in circles with that terminology, and when I expressed my confusion, they were like "what, not Indie enough for you?" And then they looked at me weird when I asked what they liked, so I could check it out - you know, like I would blindly follow their opinion just because I asked, y'know? ^_^;; But that's another topic. As I was saying - what do I have that's Emo?

Date: 2002-10-24 09:51 pm (UTC)

Yes, uhm... question... what the heck IS emo, anyway? I never got that term and nobody's gone and pointed it out. ::perplexed::

From what I've gathered, it's like Punk that isn't.
Lots of help, I know, but I already said I don't get this genre thing. ^_^;;

Dashboard Confessional, one of the whinier Emo bands out there... ^_^ Don't worry, though...I like a grand total of ONE of their songs, so you're not alone.
From: [identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com
Ahhh, Dashboard Confessional. Right then. I guess they could be PunkThatsNot. In that sense, I guess Lucky Boy Confusion might also be Emo, but I'm not sure. I think I've heard rumors that Blink 182 is Emo....? Is Wheezer? ^_^;; I'm still at a loss for what Emo is, though...

As far as Whatever You Need goes, that's actually the only Dashboard Confessional song that I have (that is, I downloaded a slue of them, but deleted all the rest). I think it's actually a pretty good song, though not the Best of the Best, y'know?

Additionally, I listened to Ohverin last night, and I REALLY liked it. Really. I'm afraid Me Neither kinda sticks out a bit (and maybe that could been fixed by moving some songs around) but I put it in there as one of the "Goofy" songs - and I think Oli likes Country, anyways. I hope. I feel kinda weird admitting it, but I REALLY like Hunter by Dido, and it's rather been stuck in my head all day. ^_^;; Now I'm rather Jealous of Oli, cause she gets t'keep it.

I'm such a weeeeeirdo.

No, no, Blink 182 is Pop Punk (my term). Weezer is Emo-looking (since now it's a whole damn fashion style as well...but Weezer did it first), but they don't do Emo stuff.

Never heard "Whatever You Need". I have this weepy song called "For You to Notice", which I listen to when I'm feeling particularly ignored by the opposite sex. I'm really not into Emo. I like sad songs...I like dark songs...I'm not into weepy.

And as for the fact that you don't get to keep the CD...just make yourself one, dork!!
From: [identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com
::Blink blink:: I'm never going to understand there's genres. I'll just stick to "Angry" and "Dark" and "Happy" and such...

Whatever You Need is OK - like I said, not great, but it's good if you're in that sorta mood. Kinda like Bread. :p
I don't understand your term 'weepy' (as I've mostly associated it with menopause for some reason...?) but I think I can understand why you say they're "whiny."

As for the CD - yeah, I could make a copy. But I suppose an painter could copy one of their works, or a sculptor, or an architect. The point isn't whether it's Art by anyone else's standards, nor is the point whether or not I COULD duplicate the CD. It's a something which I created, and to copy it seems to devalue it, I suppose. I've only 'copied' one CD ever, and that was contrived - a twin set if you will. Additionally, there are connections I've made between Ohverin and Vigor and (even if only I perceive them) a copy of one would not truly be complete without a copy of the other.
Call me weird, that's my story. And I'm sticking to it.
