The other day someone was talking about "doing things in tangent." I'm
fairly certain that they meant tandem, as in working together or
coordinating, rather than tangent, meaning diverting from the original
course or being irrelevant.

Also, regarding something that they were really ambivalent about, someone
said that they "could care less." No, you couldn't. You couldn't
care less, indicating a complete lack of concern. If you could care
less then that means you do care, which isn't the intended meaning.

These little things bug me a whole lot more than they really should.

My pet peeve is when someone says "I did it on accident". No. No you did it BY accident. You do things ON purpose. Rar!

I've seen "Could care less," explained away as an acceptable variant, on the grounds that it's to be take as sarcastic.

Carl calls certain points "mute". And then I'm forced to make a veiled correction like, "Yeah, you're right - it is a moot point." Either that, or just bite my tongue until it bleeds - because you learn when it's okay to correct your lover's mistakes and when it's not okay - and I know that most of the time, Carl hates it when I correct him, even if I try to do it nicely. ::shrugs:: Such is love and its compromises.

While we're on the topic of language things that piss me off: the other day, I saw an ad in a magazine that pluralized "TV" as "TV's". Now - I have seen it listed as acceptable in certain style guides to pluralize abbreviations that involve periods (i.e., Ph.D.) with an apostrophe-s, it is not acceptable to pluralize an abbreviation without periods with an apostrophe-s. Carl actually argued with me on that point, and...well, I guess it's a testament to me letting these things bother me more than I should, because I almost got angry at him for that.

So, uhm...yes, I commiserate.

maybe they meant tangent like they are doing things in the right direction, but in a lower dimension?

I'm such a nerd :P
