There are not words to express the... anger I feel at reading This. A kid is arrested for opening a Christmas present early. Well, OK, he's arrested because his mom called the cops on him because he kept dis-obeying her. And I'm skeptical of how much ADHD plays into this, mostly because medication isn't doing anything.

This isn't the first time I've heard of parents calling the cops on their kids for misbehaving, and the simple fact that they would, and have, and... It's beyond my scope of understanding.

People who can't parent shouldn't have kids.

It's time to revoke a few parenting licenses... wait.

Also, let's not forget the culture that has built up the getting and acquisitiveness that is now associated with this holiday season rather than the giving, the compassion and togetherness... which culture the parents in this case are clearly buying in to.

Heh. 'Buying in.' That's amusing.

Unfortunately, this is the first time I've heard of a parent calling the cops on something materialistic and, really, that wasn't even the point. The point was that the child wasn't listening, and so the parent resorted to Law Enforcement.

Law Enforcement. I already don't think they should be babysitting the highways the way they are, I REALLY don't think they should be babysitting as such.

Earlier stories I heard (that I can't find links to) involved kids who wouldn't go to bed, or wouldn't do their homework. What did the parents do? Call the cops.

Oh, I completely agree with you. It's absurd. Not only calling the cops over a kid opening a present... (like, seriously... what?) but also the way they raised this kid that he wouldn't wait.'

When the kids are out of control, the safest place to look for cause-and-effect is the parents.

"Officer! Officer! We raised this kid such that he can't delay gratification at all and has to have this shiny toy we bought him RIGHT NOW! Fix him for us, Officer!"

Even if it isn't failure as a parent that they couldn't instill patience in their child, court is a long term punishment, not a short term one. Saying "You got to play with the toy but you're really going to regret this when you turn 18!" is the worst possible way to teach the child a lesson. Even a simple solution like not letting the child play with the gift until febuary shows the child a punishment that directly relates to the disobedience.

I think it's possibly a good thing she's turning him over to the state. If she thinks that the police are a good solution to a problem like that, at least she realizes she isn't fit to properly raise him. The only odd thing is that he isn't her first child, the video showed his older brother. You would think after one, she might understand children a little better.
