Ok, so I think you need to be a 'special' kind of literature-geek to really appreciate This, but maybe not. it's an article Wired did in their magazine, asking current writers to emulate Hemingway's shortest story Some of what they got, sadly, reads at best like newspaper headlines. The ones I consider worst pretty much just make fun of the exercise. But a number (some listed below) come close to Hemmingway's elegance. One of them reminded me of a Snippet I did a while back.

From torched skyscrapers, men grew wings.
- Gregory Maguire

With bloody hands, I say good-bye.
- Frank Miller

It cost too much, staying human.
- Bruce Sterling

Gown removed carelessly. Head, less so.
- Joss Whedon

To save humankind he died again.
- Ben Bova

K.I.A. Baghdad, Aged 18 - Closed Casket
- Richard K. Morgan

Nevertheless, he tried a third time.
- James P. Blaylock

I saw, darling, but do lie.
- Orson Scott Card

Hey, yeah, I'd say that might just be the best thing Hemingway ever wrote. Not that my opinion of Hemingway isn't incredibly low. No, not at all.

Me? Mean? To Hemingway? Never! I love Hemingway! Why, he's the finest deceased, chauvinistic, alcohol-soaked boring writer I can think of!

(To be fair, though, I am a fan of his "The first draft of anything is shit" sentiment.)
