The Ecard Said:
This is a thank you for the roses. They are beatiful and I appreciated them very much. It was quite thoughtful and generous of you. The last email I received from you, saving most recent about coming up on Thursdays, was about writing class and the girl with the suicide intro. Happy thought:) I think it would be nice if you could keep Contra up, especially since you enjoy it. Have a blessed Holy Week. And thank you again for the flowers.--Suzannah
-giggles- She called me the Prince of Cats -- Rachel, maybe you can verify this, but perhapse that was the epithet from Romeo and Juliet which she said would be fitting for me... I'm going to go sit in a corner and beam for the rest of the night, now. If you'll excuse me.

Date: 2004-04-06 05:29 pm (UTC)In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio called Tybalt a "Price of Cats", reffering to the idea that he was less-than-noble I guess. I guess its a play on word cause tybalt is a common name for cats at the time, or something like that. But anyway, Tybalt is Juliet's cousin, and he kills Mercutio. Romeo in turn, kills Tybalt. So I guess maybe she thinks of you as her cousin?
Watch your back! :P

Alas poor Romeo! he is already dead; stabbed with a
white wench's black eye; shot through the ear with a
love-song; the very pin of his heart cleft with the
blind bow-boy's butt-shaft: and is he a man to
encounter Tybalt?
BENVOLIO
Why, what is Tybalt?
MERCUTIO
More than prince of cats, I can tell you. O, he is
the courageous captain of compliments. He fights as
you sing prick-song, keeps time, distance, and
proportion; rests me his minim rest, one, two, and
the third in your bosom: the very butcher of a silk
button, a duellist, a duellist; a gentleman of the
very first house, of the first and second cause:
ah, the immortal passado! the punto reverso! the
hai!
There may be a few various interpretations for this term. It may have come from the famous Persian fencer, also named Tybalt also named Prince of Cats. Or it was a sexual slur (from an Italian word similar to cats) which Shakespeare is certainly known to put all over the place. But most likely, it is a reference to his skill of fighting, because everything else dexcribed in that passage from Mercutio is all about different fight moves (i.e. I used a punto reverso in my SPT fight last year. It's a fun move).
So, I'm not sure what the connection Suzannah has made is... possibly just that you like cats. :-)
Nice note. Have fun beaming. :-)

Date: 2004-04-06 11:58 pm (UTC)It's quite simple, really... Suzannah, it seems, likes epithets, and early on she was trying to think of one for me. I mewed in a letter or two, and she said she'd thought of the perfect one, from Romeo and Juliet. Though I can't follow much of Mercutio's ramblings (he's quite loquacious, no?), the phrase "a gentleman of the very first house, of the first and second cause" seems to imply good things. I know Tybalt kills him, but until then, what's his opinion of what's his opinion of Juliet's cousin?

Date: 2004-04-07 06:59 am (UTC)But yeah, I'd say Prince of Cats for you simply refers to your strange utterings and your fondness for cats. ;-)
Anymore Shakespeare anyone? Buehler? Buehler?

Date: 2004-04-07 07:15 am (UTC)Yes, I'm quite sure that's why she chose it; that is, my fondness for the feline.
And yes, if you would, I'd love to hear Gina's thoughts on it.
