So, I've been wearing glasses since 5th grade: we had one of those in-school
sight-and-hearing tests and it was determined that my vision was pretty
crummy. In retrospect I can't imagine how I got by, but you don't know what
you don't know, you know? I still remember how incredible it was to
actually be able to see the blackboard.

I got contacts in 8th grade (just AFTER yearbook pictures, which kinda irked
me), but I haven't been wearing them regularly for at least four years; I
just got lazy. I got new frames for my glasses a few years ago (which makes
ALL the difference) so I kinda like 'the look' these days.

Still, I think that, eventually, I'll want to get eye surgery to correct my
vision. I might still keep my glasses (with plain glass lenses) just
because I like how they look so much, but the lure of not groping for my
glasses in the morning and being able to *really* enjoy time at the beach or
a pool is kind of tempting. I know a few people who say they've had the
surgery and don't have complaints, but it seems that the FDA is investigating
the risks of Lasik
, and articles like that get my worries fired up.

So, have any of YOU had vision correction? Any good or bad comments?
Anyone out there with poor vision who definitively DOES NOT want it
surgically corrected?

(As an aside, I'm struck sometimes by the number of people I know who wear
glasses. Not exactly sure why, but it's got that "hey, me too!" feeling to
it.)

let me just start off by saying how much i want corrective surgery! I have had glasses since 4th grade and i am done with being blind O_o

The only person I know who has had corrective surgery turned out ok but had issues at first. When Brittany's brother Heath had the surgery he got some kinda of infection that caused him terrible headaches and his vision was constantly blurry. They were actually scared that he was going to go blind O_o but it cleared up in a few days and now he is perfectly fine!

My father has cataract in both of his eyes and they will be doing surgery this summer on his eyes. They are basically going to put plastic lenses permanently on his eyes, if i understand it correctly! I will let you know how that goes. We are also scared of infection because apparently he has to stay in a dust free environment and with our kitties that is not really an option! So I think my poor father will be living in a motel for a few weeks after surgery O_o

I have really bad vision. Like.. vision so bad my eye doctor laughs at me when I come in. But I wear contacts and have been since 7th grade. I'm happy with them. I would never ever ever have Lasik surgery. The idea of someone using a laser to peel back part of my EYE freaks me out. And then I start thinking about crazy what ifs like "what if the doctor has a heart attack during the surgery and the laser goes crazy and cuts off half of my face?" So. No. I wouldn't do it.

But my grandpa had it done on both eyes and was totally happy with it, if that helps at all.

my mom got it done and loves it. She got had a really good doctor - did a lot of research and only did one eye at a time (not both together). Her reasoning was that, as a pretty good doctor herself, she knows that doctors (even the great ones) are still human. Accidents/mistakes can happen. She split it up so that if something did happen she would still have sight in one eye

I have really bad eye sight. As in, I can't read the computer screen I"m in front of right now because I don't have my glasses on.

I really really am uncomfortable with the thought of someone surgically fixing my eyesight. You have to be awake for it, and so many things can go wrong. A lot of people I know had to go back for a second time because the dr botched the first surgery. I'd rather wear glasses and be blind at the beach than mess up my eyesight even more. [Yes, I should be wearing my glasses, shouldn't I? :P]

If you feel Lasik is what you want to do, I'm all for that, but it's totally not for me. I love my glasses.

P.S. Matt says he likes his glasses, too, and no, he will not get an LJ.

Eye surgery cannot stop mother nature. It dries your eyes out, makes them more light sensitive, and only tends to halt things for about four years, after which many people begin to need reading glasses, and it eventually progresses until they need glasses full-time again. It's not recommended for astigmatism, or for people who have pretty high prescriptions. The procedure hardens the eyes, so focusing begins to get harder and harder, and well... let's just say I'm never going to do it, ever.
