jackofallgeeksMore from the "Think of the Children!" department, a teacher-in-training is denied her degree in Education because of a MySpace Picture of her in a pirate hat drinking from a plastic "Mr Goodbar" cup. The picture happened to have the caption, "drunken pirate."
*sigh* I don't really have the energy to comment. This is stupid. Someone decided she was "too unprofessional"? Please. I defy you to find any job environment anywhere that's always professional -- it's not in computers, it's not in government, and it's certainly not in education. And never mind that actual content of the photo. She's a 27-year old woman wearing a funny hat and drinking from an opaque cup. I... Feh. I haven't the energy.
The thing of it is, what it comes down to, is that... I love the Information Age. I love the fact that we have this whole Internet thing, that we have social networks and news groups and community sites and everything. Yeah, there are the sketchier areas of the web, the digital red-light districts and the dark alleys you should probably avoid, but all in all it's no more or less than reality. The problem is people are stupid. And these stupid, holier-than-thou people get a hold of a little piece of information here, or a photo there, and suddenly the whole professional mask, the social facade that we put up against the great unwashed, is cracked and we find, to our shock and amazement, that everyone is human. That we all have our faults, that we all have our quirks and that, once in a while, we like to let our proverbial hair down and enjoy ourselves. And what's so frustrating is that... that peopke don't get it. That somehow we... gah. People are dumb.
At least she's fighting back. The poor girl whose career was ended by an earlier career in 'undesirable' entertainment (not even, she wasn't in soft porn or anything) would probably never have a chance, her character having been called into such question, but this girl was preemptively canned for a caption.
