Revenge of the Hope?

OK, so this is actually pretty interesting: in light of Episodes I-III, perhapse there was Far More going on in Episode IV than it would at first seem.

(Frankly, I don't count Eps. I-III as canon, but that's because I think they just Mess Things Up.)

That actually makes a decent amount of sense of a lot of stuff that got screwed up by I-III. Though, I still say that the whole thing sounds a heckuva lot like when a game I'm running gets out of hand because I just started improvising bits of plot on the fly, and then when the players start saying things like, "Ah! So, Makatiel must have been working with the Broken Path even before the war, and then that would mean that the McGuffin of Doom is from the future!" and I say, "uh, yeah, exactly, glad you *finally* figured it out..."
