NaNoWriMo

So, I know some of you out there have done NaNoWriMo. I've meant to, but haven't, and it's coming up again. How did you do it? Did you have an idea of what you wanted to write, or who you wanted to write about, before you sat down on November 1st? What advice can you give me?

I have never successfully started, much less finished, NaNoWriMo, mostly because of school. I would very much like to do it, probably at some point this spring, once I'm school-free, and we'll see if I can manage it.

One thing I have done, though is read this book. I purchased it, actually, and not only is it a very quick read, it's a very inspiring one. And since it's tailored specifically for NaNoWriMo hopefuls, it would probably be one of the best ways to look into the whole thing for yourself. And I happen to know my store has a copy. :3

What is this NaNoWriMo you speak of?

National Novel Writing Month. Or November. But what it actually is: a push, or competition (without any, uhm, competition), or just encouragement for regular people, like you and me, to 'write a novel' in one month. Starting on November 1st with word one and working however you will (though I'm told writing consistently every day is best), the objective is to write a complete story of 50,000 words or more before November 30th.
