This is all true, but I didn't know how old you were when I posted, and my rant sounded better as it is anyways. Also, Josh hitting a possum doesn't have anything to do with anything. People hit deer (much larger than possums) all the time, and they can still drive their friends around. Parents just need to understand when it's time to let go and recognize that their children are adults -- for years this has been the age of 18, though the Government's been getting on my nerves lately pulling the same tricks over-protective parents do and moving responsibility out of our collective grasp.

And, uhm, you needn't agree with me on the Kermit bit. Really.

I personally think the government has been putting up more restrictions on age because of people like my brother. Seriously, hes been kicked out of 4 different schools, and hes been arrested! Hes 2 yrs younger than me! Sure they are probably taking it too far in some cases, but i guess they think that the good kids will listen and the bad kids wont. Plus nowadays lots of parents are careing less and less about their teenage kids. So the government takes control. But who knows.

I disagree. I think that people like your brother are symptoms of the over-protectiveness I'm complaining about. Maybe it's a vicious cycle, but it's one that can be broke, I think, with good parenting rather than a denial of responsibility. You and I and your brother and my sisters and everyone -- we were made what we are today by the experiences live has given us. One can not argue that denying something like driving privileges or legal consumption of alcohol denys experiences, either -- not only because kids drink illegally (we all know they do), but also because the lack of said experience is itself an experience -- and if nothing else it's faulty to deny children and young adults experience with responsibility for precisely the reasons I mentioned before: they won't know how to handle responsibility when it *is* given to them. Sure, people ought to be held responsible, and ought to suffer the just consequences of their actions -- but without the requisite actions the just consequences will never follow and no lesson will be learned. And you'll end up with a nation of spoiled, rebellious children who neither know nor care how they ought to behave.

Further, age is a bad measure of anything at all, period. there are people twice my age who act half it and those half my age that act twice it. Now, it may be the best measure that the government has, but you can't say all twentysomethings are such-and-such. Life experiences, once again, make all the difference. You are right now in the beginning of an experience that could potentially change you drastically -- College. There's so much that happens in college that I might say that close to half of who I am is because of College -- if not by direct infusion then because who I was before College was tempered and refined by my experiences there.
