Looking for Music

So, my little sister Becky likes my music. and, being me, I encourage this, usually by burning CDs. Now, the fact that her most requested song is "Almost Human" by Voltaire (lyrics below) kinda bugs me; it's alright for me, at 22, but she's only 8. It shouldn't resonate with her. Anyways, she's requested that I make her a new CD, but this time she has requests.
I gave up 'illicit' file sharing a couple years ago, mostly because the networks were generally sucking. This turns out to be a good thing, actually, in that my current and prospective employers frown upon such activities. So, I signed up to Napster, and it actually hasn't been that bad. A little fee, and some songs must be purchased rather than simply downloaded, but they let you listen to the song (or a clip of it in a few cases), and it's reasonably easy to search. So I'm liking it -- and as I said before, I've no problem paying $1 for a song if you let me get the songs I want.
But, now that I have legitimate means, I'm looking for suggestions from you all as to bands or songs I should check out. If it helps, a small list of bands I like would include Assemblage 23, VNV Nation, Cruxshadows, Queensryche, Savatage, The Decemberists, Porcupine Tree, Muse, and others along those lines. I like sad songs, but if any of you have happy songs (or happy-like songs) to suggest, I've quite a deficiency in those.
And, as a note, Lindsay Lohan kinda sucks as a singer. And she really sucks as a blond. (My sister made me get her songs for her CD.)
Almost Human by Voltaire
What did I ever do to you that you should treat me this way? Is it really such a crime for an angel to speak his mind? In time I'll try to shed some light... If I were a big boy I wouldn't cry, but since I'm not a big boy I'll have to cry...
What did I ever do so wrong that you should cast me from grace? Though I love to rule in hell, here, how I miss the taste of heaven, its soft and cool embrace. If I were a big boy I wouldn't cry, but since I'm not a big boy I'll have to close my eyes and picture what's it's like.
I'm just like you, I'm made by He, despised by they, I'm almost me. I'm nearly human, look at me, I'm almost a human being.
I'm just like you, I'm made by He, despised by they, I'm almost me. I'm nearly human. Pity me, I'm almost a human being.
I still remember your light, and it was streaming down and burning out my eyes. If I were a big boy I wouldn't cry, but since I'm not a big boy I'll have to close my eyes and picture what it's like.
I'm just like you, I'm made by He, despised by they, I'm almost me. I'm nearly human, look at me, I'm almost a human being.
There tears are real. I'm jealousy, I'm spite and hate, to the core I'm mean. I'm nearly human, look at me, I'm almost a human being.
I'm just like you, better than He, to hell with they, I'm almost me. I'm nearly human. Pity me, I'm almost a human being.
Don't touch me, oh, I couldn't bear the thought of it, now. Don't touch me, oh, I couldn't bear the strength.
Don't touch me, oh, I couldn't bear the thought of it, now. Touch me, touch me, touch me. Don't touch me, touch me, touch me.

Date: 2006-01-16 07:33 pm (UTC)There are a few classic bands in the rough genre (I don't know all the bands, because I'm an old fogey, but seems like you're in the market for goth and/or industrial) you seem to be looking for that aren't on your list (but you may just not have listed them): Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Front 242 (some of it), Dead Can Dance, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult (Confessions of a Knife or Sexplosion!), Nitzer Ebb (and I'm so sure you've heard of Marilyn Manson and NIN that I'm not going to bother mentioning them... er, except here).
Granted, some of these bands might have lyrics you find objectionable (TPH are ostensibly satanists, but in a campy 80s metal way I find hard to take seriously), but I think that's going to be an occupational hazard anywhere in the metal/goth/industrial neighborhood.
Also: glad you enjoyed the Nightcrawler book.

Date: 2006-01-17 07:28 am (UTC)I'm familiar with most of those classic groups, though being reminded to get more of their stuff is always good. And actually, the ones you mentioned are all ones that I know of, but haven't really listened to, so I've got them queued up. I don't think I could find Nitzer Ebb, though.
As for offensive lyrics, I think it's a proven fact that what does and does not strike me as offensive comes as a shock to most people who know me. Or maybe it doesn't; in either case, I know the risks I run in listening to this genre. So far, there's only been one band that I liked their music and didn't like their lyrics, so we're doing pretty good on that front.
And Re-Nightcrawler: that was very awesome. I have half a mind to track down some more nightcrawler comics, because he's a very cool character (and it'd be nice to learn more about him).

Date: 2006-01-17 11:52 am (UTC)"Cold Metal Perfection" is actually the name of Nic Endo's solo album, not a band name (I realize now that I was a bit ambiguous about that) - if you're interested, you can at least listen to some clips at Digital Hardcore's store (scroll down). You used to be able to download DHR tracks from Liquid Audio for 25 cents each, but the link seems to be dead. Oh well. I could email you a couple mp3s if you want (ditto for TPH).
And re: lyrics, yeah I figured you at least had a thick skin about them. I just figured that you might not want to be sending your 8 year old sister songs with lyrics like "Father Satan, bless us with sin!"

Date: 2006-01-17 04:04 pm (UTC)Well, for the most part this is all meant for me, not her; mentioning her at all was simply an explanation as to why I finally got a Napster account (I'm fine with buying mp3s, as I've said before, but never went ahead with it until now). I'm a little bit more careful as to what songs I give my sister; that she heard and liked 'Almost Human' was more-or-less an accident, and not something I would have given her otherwise. Likewise, she's erequested a Country song called "Nothing On But The Radio," which is pretty much about what you might think it's about, though I'm not sure she knows that. I'm fairly certain that I'm "not going to find it."
And yeah, I'd be interested in listening to some of those tracks if you wanted to send them my way. And Apocalyptica with no lyrics is different from gs!ybe with no lyrics, because it's strings music, and I love Strings music (not to say I don't like gs!ybe, mind). In fact, have you heard Avenged Sevenfold? I like them almost exclusively because they do some amazing things on the guitar.

Date: 2006-01-17 05:16 am (UTC)You might like In Strict Confidence. I've only heard two of their songs, but I highly recommend "Seven Lives", preferably the Extended and De/Vision mixes.
Hell...you'd probably like De/Vision, too. And Iris. And Godhead, whose lead singer was my friend Tess's husband's roommate in college and who I sat next to and discussed MMO's with at her wedding. :3 As for songs:
De/Vision: "Heroine"
Iris: "Sorrow Expert", "Vacant", "In Spite", "Appetite"...just for starters
Godhead: "The Reckoning", for starters.
Also, very recently, I discovered a duo called Syntax who released a truly amazing techno album. I'm especially fond of the songs "Message" and "Strange Days". If you can't find their songs, I'll be happy to burn you a copy of the album.

I found all the songs you mentioned from Godhead and Iris. I found De/Vision and In Strict Confidence, but not the songs you listed (and In Strict Confidence only had one). I didn't find Syntax.
