1x Pillage 1RR (AL)
1x Earth Rift 3R (OD-Common)
1x Demolish 3R (OD-Uncommon)
1x Rain of Salt 4RR (PR-Common)
4x Stone Rain 2R (TE)
4x Memory Lapse 1U (MI)
4x Psychic Venom 1U (4th)
2x Power Sink XU (MM-Common)
2x Counterspell UU (MM-Common)
4x Phantasmal Terrain UU (IN-Common)
4x Erosion UUU (4th)
10x Mountain
10x Island
OK, the idea behind this deck is very simple - you take your opponent's Mana away from him, and then just take him apart. Your kill cards are those first 12 - the Kindles, Longhorn Firebeasts, Pardic Firecats, and Flame Bursts. I dropped two firecats for the longhorns because they have more damage potential. Sure, it might weaken my Bursts a little, but the cats would have to be dead, anyways.
The other eight Red cards are simple - they kill lands, dead. Thanks to the redundance of Rain of Salt, and repeatability of Earth Rift, you can take out 10 lands with those 8 spells. That's half of the lands in most any deck I make, and a large number in most other decks. Except for the Pillage and the Salt, all the spells only require one red - convenient for a 2-Color deck.
Blue has similar stall tactics. Erosion, Phantasmal Terrain, and Psychic Venom all 'remove' Mana from your opponent. The Erosion eats either life, Mana, or Land. The Venom eats life, or shuts down the Land, and the Terrain, while not removing Mana, basically has the potential to make the color useless to your opponent. All accounted for, Blue and Red, you can shut down some 22 lands - very nice, indeed.
As a back up, this deck also packs 8 permission cards. You'll notice I only play 2 Counterspells. Now, any Blue Mage worth his salt KNOWs that Counterspells are staples to any permission. However, they also take UU, and with my choppy mana base, two Islands might be hard to come by. Instead, I pack the temporary Memory Lapse and the more costly Power Sink, bot of which only require one Island. If I find that two islands isn't too much to ask, I may drop the Lapses, and maybe drop them all together for a couple more sinks, too.
So, basically, you remove all their mana and take them out with a combo of creatures and damage while they're paralyzed.

Date: 2002-03-30 08:50 pm (UTC)i sooo have to show kaitlin your LJ. thomas too...he will freak. heh. you're getting me on a magic kick too now.
Sweet! I'm Contagious!
Date: 2002-03-30 09:08 pm (UTC)Anyways, almost nothing compliments better than Red/Blue. I say almost nothing because I'm a big fan of Black/Green Recursion and I've got a nice Black/Blue (splashed Red) discard deck. But then, I'm a Black Mage. And, of course, Blue/Green just gets sick.
As for showing them my Journal - wait till that community goes up! This is what I hope that things like - deck lists, war stories, maybe some creative writing, speculations, combos and such - it could be REALLY awsome.
Just waiting for the code...I'm actually thinking I might want to pay for the community, just to make it that much cooler....
