Work Update

Ok, well, as mom predicted, my fears concerning work, while not unfounded, were probably a little premature. Today was a much nicer day at work than even yesterday, and certainly better than any of the days previous.
Let me explain.
Sometime in early June, Gene, Josh and I applied for jobs at Subway. We were given a prompt interview as a group, and the owner-manager, Mohammad, said he was opening a new store just down the street and could probably give us jobs, but most likely just part-time at $6/hr. This was fine for me, as I wasn't looking for anything intensive this Summer, and better-than-nothing for Gene, who needs to earn Tuition Money. Josh got a job at a nearby gas-station-quick-mart thing, for $7/hr to do less-intensive work.
Mohammad said that the store was supposed to open on the 28th, and that he'd call us about training on the 24th. He called us into training on about the 26th (or was it later?), and said that the store wouldn't be open until the 30th. Then, he said it wouldn't be open until the 4th. it finally 'opened' on the 5th, except that the entire day was spent with a Corporate Rep training us new-hires in Subway protocol and stuff. The 6th was spent getting the store set up because the register -- what they call a 'POS Unit' (Point of Sale), a name which will always make me giggle -- which had supposed to have been delivered that day couldn't be delivered until the next day. We 'officially' opened on the 6th anyways, with the help of an off-the-counter register which, frankly, didn't work very well at all. We 'really' opened on the 7th, when they had me close (we close with Wal-Mart, in which we are ensconced, at midnight). Then, they wanted me up to open at 7am. This was the angry-post I put up yesterday; I was not happy after closing, and was not looking forward to opening after but four hours of sleep.
Last night, I talked with Mohammad and voiced a few of my concerns: when are we getting paid (bi-weekly, starting next Friday), how are hours going to be tracked (a time-clock is being set up this week), and discussed my availability (and days, any times, no opening the day after closing, no more than 8 hours a day, no more than 40 hours a week, and time off to go see Rachel). And all-in-all it was an amiable, rather anti-climactic discussion.
I opened again today, and will do the same tomorrow, so it looks like that'll be my lot for the summer. Saturday is apparently our slow day, with relatively little traffic, minus a couple quick rushes. I spent my time mostly behind the scenes making sure bread was baked, dishes were washed, and the sandwich-monkeys up front had the stuff they needed. And I kinda liked it. I also like it because I feel like Mohammad has some amount of respect for me, in an 'assistant-manager' sort of way. I was born and bred for managment, so I like this.
And, uhm, I guess that's about it. Now, Gene, Josh, and I are going to watch 'Garden State,' and then I was thinking of reading a book or maybe taking a nap, or simply going to bed. But all's well, it seems, so yay.

Good luck in Cali, I don't think I'll see you before hand with the surgery and such. I might fly out there or something...
