jackofallgeeks: (WTF)

So, Leslie tagged me to list three songs I hate to love, and three songs I love to hate. And, truth be told, I'm not sure which is more difficult: If I don't like a song, I don't listen to it, so I can't really *think* of many songs I don't like, let alone hate so much that it's something of a love. On the other had, I can think of plenty of songs that I like and feel a little goofy about, but the closest those come are "guilty pleasure," not really "hate to love." But I'll see what I can do.

Hate To Love

01. Happy Boys and Girls by Aqua: Uhm, it's Aqua. I'm sure that'll be easy enough for the 'hate' part to come through. We're talking about the same people that did Barbie Girl. And not only is it by a less-than-par band, but the lyrics are pretty poor, too. "Come on let's go have some fun, everybody let's go get it on," x6; "Happy Boys and Happy Girls we'll be" x12; end of song. And it's bubblegum-pop; that cutesy, sugary, bouncy, meaningless drivel. But, uhm, yeah. I like this song. Like, a lot. It's one of about six songs that fit in my 'happy music' category, and I can't help but sing along to it.

10. Lucky by Britney Spears: Uhm, it's Britney Spears. Again, the 'hate' is quite obvious. In a lot of ways, Britney Spears can be seen as a figurehead for a whole subset of the things I hate about pop-culture. Last I heard, none of her songs are written by her, she's just sex-with-a-voice that can sell albums; and she's not even pretty! And the song itself is just kinda whiny and superficial and highlights the unthinking hero-worship that pop-stars get. But this song just seems... uncharacteristically deep. I don't know, I just kinda like what it says, and what it doesn't say, and it just makes me think sometimes. I was going to put "Baby One More Time", but I only really like Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's hard-rock version, and think hers is bad; I didn't think it counted, and even if it does, this one's better cause it's her singing it.

11. Sing for the Moment by Eminem: OK, the hate. There was a time when I would say I liked anything "but rap and country." Rap was always mindless, full of vulgarity and sex and meaningless aggression and anger. And it all sounded the same, with too much base and all the same notes, and a steam of words that became a monotonous drone of sound. On top of that, this song takes a really cool Aerosmith song, rips out a couple of lines, and cans them in stead of any real chorus of it's own. That having been said, I have to admit that Eminem (of all artists *wince*) was who turned me on to rap. I can't really say how or why or when, but his songs just seem to have more sense to them, something to say, and yeah he'll be vulgar and offensive to (and whiny as only a white guy can be), but he just seems to really have a reason for the lyrics he's got. So, uhm, yeah. Hate the song, but kinda like it, too. So, this is the best "hate to love."

Love to Hate

01. The Thong Song by Sisqo: OK, yeah, I'm stealing this one from Mike, but like I said, I can't really think of any songs I hate on my own. This song has it all -- objectification of women, meaningless sex, and (as Mike pointed out) lyrics like [some obscure-yet-oddly-thought-provoking-simile]. And the music sucks. I mean, there's really nothing to like about this trash. I don't even like thongs themselves!

10. Candle in the Wind (Goodbye England's Rose) by Elton John: Oooooh, here's a good one. I remembered this while digging through my Trash folder on Unicron -- I made the folder because I've been going through lots of mp3 files, and I promised Gene I wouldn't delete any without letting him check them out first. Anyways. I hate this song. Like, with the fury of a thousand suns. Elton John took a good song, Norma Jean, and adulterated it. Yes, OK, what happened to Princess Diana was unfortunate; I'm too young to really remember her at all, but I'm told she was a good person who did good things. It's unfortunate that she died the way she did at the time she did. But I'm far too young to even possibly remember Ms. Baker, and her story is far more tragic. Princess Diana died in her prime; Norma Jean was destroyed in a much more profound way by a much more sinister system; and, on top of that, Norma Jean is just a better song than England's Rose; the lyrics flow better and say more and just... I hate this song. (And wow, I just looked her up on Wikipedia, and... Wow!)

11. Coffeepot by Cajmere: This may not be the right name, or the right artist. It could be "Percolator," or "It's Time for the Percolator," and it may be by "Green Velvet," instead of "Cajmere"; or those could all be aliases of the same people and things. I don't know. Nor do I care. I am in agony already from knowing as much as I do now after Googling in hopes of finding you a Title and Artist to list for this thing. What I DO know is that back in the '90s there was some 'dance mix' thing that was bubbling over the place which was, quite simply, merde. If "Happy Boys and Girls" pushes the acceptable limits for repeating lines, this goes far and away beyond that, and all to an annoyingly bubbly background. "It's Time For The Percolator" x216, end song. Please. I hate this song with the fury of a thousand England's Roses.

Aww, I love "Happy Boys and Girls" too. Only I am completely unashamed of my love for it. :3

The guy I got the meme from listed "Baby One More Time" as a song he hated to love, noting the Ahmet & Dweezil cover as what he really loved, so don't feel it's going unstated.

That said, you haven't made me laugh so hard at a post in...perhaps ever. Thank you.

-laughs- Unashamed even knowing that it's Aqua? I mean, like I said, I'm mostly unashamed, too, but, dude. Aqua.

And you really thought this was funny?  ^_^;;  Why so? I mean, what in particular? I didn't really intend on it being funny, not that I was taking myself entirely seriously, either. But then, when do I ever?

Hey, I've had nothing but good experiences with Aqua. I first heard "Happy Boys and Girls" set to a DiGi Charat music video, and it's been nothing but love since. I even kinda dig on that Barbie song, just 'cause it's so tongue-in-cheek. It's not like they're Toy Box (of the hideous "The Sailor Song" fame), c'mon!

Just...your turn-of-phrase on this post, particularly regarding the Percolator song. Maybe I just love adorable mini-ranting. Either way, it was awesome.
