So, my roomie works DC Reads, which is a program for college students to help teach kids in DC public school. I won't go into all the idiocy that's involved with this (trust me, there's a lot) but he just shared a recent tidbit with me:
Apparently, he went in today and his student wasn't there. In fact, his student had been suspended. For what you might ask? He was late to class. Yes, late to class, by about ten minutes. How long is his suspension? Ten days. Over two weeks suspension, for missing ten minutes of class. And why is this? Because the School Board decided that any infraction at all would be punished by suspension.
And in a decade or so, they're going to wonder why their kids are failing out of school, getting in trouble with the law, and generally being Bad Human Beings.
