Holy Wow!

So, I was looking at OKCupid, just because. Y'know, it's a thing to do. And I opened my "match page", where they show you a list of people who they think you'd get along with. And it's the same list of people, with percentages like 86, 88, 84. And it occurred to me that Emily's never been on my list (sorry, Emily, it's the truth) and I've never noticed our rating, but she said we had a lot in common. So I went over to her profile to check our rating...

Ninety percent! Several points higher than anyone I've ever seen on my match page! Why in the WORLD would she not show up on my list?

Josh pointed out that, unless it's a government website, Google never finds the most relevant information, either.
I might think that it's because it's not looking far enough away, but Baltimore's within 100miles of DC, isn't it?

Yes, it is

Baltimore is definitely within 100 miles of DC. And I live south of Baltimore, in Elkridge. According to OKCupid, Elkridge is 23 miles from DC. I think I search within 50 or 100 miles.

The other thing

The other thing is that OKCupid never promises to find the best match. To provide quick matches, it just searches a random sample of people, and then ranks the people from that group. So when it picks 100 people, you usually get some good matches, and when it picks 3, you might not. In any case, while it is statisically improbable, it is possible that the OKCupid server just never picked my profile to consider in these random grabs.
(but if it had, you would have contacted me first, right?) ;)

You're right, they don't promise that. But see, the funny thing is this: My Match List has been 'the same' (with slight variation as my answered questions climbed from 15 to 410) since day one. So i'm not even so sure it's a 'random' sampling.

But yes, for a Match of 90%, I probably would have at least said 'hello.' -laughs- I'm really shy, or hadn't you noticed?
