See-Saw?

So, I asked Suzannah out to the movies, specifically to see 'Saw'. Her reply was "a tentative 'yes,' though subject to radical, immediate, and unpredictable change if my sense gets the better of me." She scares easily -- so do I, but I figure that's half the point. Since this exchange, though, I've stumbled upon mixed reviews for 'Saw'. Some really liked it, some really hated it, some thought it was too gorey, and some didn't think it was gorey enough. Personally, I'm not a great fan of gore, and I was just sold on the promise of a psychological thriller.

Has anyone out there seen 'Saw'? What was your impression of it? Leslie, I'm looking at you, in particular, if you've seen it. It seems to be compared with 'Se7en' a bit -- what can anyone tell me about that?

What other movies are out there, as possible alternatives? I just saw 'The Incredibles' (good) and 'Team America' (bad).

You know, I was just thinking about writing up a review of "Saw" for ye olde review journal, let the poor old thing see some action again... ::smiles::

"Saw"...well, yes, the obvious comparison is to "Se7en", and not without reason. Both films are very similar in that they feature a black detective, a blonde woman, and a fucked-up storyline. Unlike "Se7en", though, I didn't immediately know what I thought of "Saw" upon its conclusion. I have some gripes about it...but all-in-all, it's a pretty smart thriller with some stunning camera work and some really good, tense, scare scenes (for these, you might want to warn Suzannah to wear gauntlets, as she will get her hands crushed otherwise. ^.~). Cary Elwes is fantastic in the starring role, the cinematography and the sets are enough to make a Silent Hill fan like myself go into convulsions of joy, and...well, it's one of the better movies out there in theatres currently. I really do recommend it, in spite of my minor moofs. It's not a gory film at all, if that's what you're worried about...it does that fantastic thing called "shooting around" things - the way I prefer gore be handled, since it leaves things to the imagination, and is therefore not only more disturbing, but easier to pull off believably. There's only one scene in the film that I would really call "gory", and that lasts for a second or so at most...and if you can't guess it's coming from what preceeds it...well. ::shrugs::

As for alternatives...since the two of you like dancing, I might reccomend the American remake of a Japanese classic, "Shall We Dance?", which has J-Lo, but also Stanley Tucci, and therefore can be forgiven.

And otherwise...has she seen "The Incredibles"? Because if she hasn't, she needs to. What a fantastic movie. ♥

For the most part, because Curtis wanted to see it on Chris's recommendation, though I suspect 'brain-devouring parasite' fits in the equation somewhere...
