So yesterday morning, City of Heroes was working -- it connected, downloaded the updates, and was running. But I had class, so I had to run, and when I came back in, the internet was down. It was down all afternoon, all night, and when it was still down this morning, I called the HelpDesk to see what was wrong.

It seems that some how, some way, the ports were opened, but when they were, several computers began hogging bandwidth and denying other computers service, timing-out their reqests. Some genius decided that the best way to fix this was to deny everyone sevice and shut all the ports, which included internet ports. Just after calling the HelpDeck, the internet came back up, but CoH would not connect.

I'm a little worried and feel a little guilty -- I have no way of knowing if my computer, while updating CoH, was one of the culprit machines, or if it was a cabal of zombie-bots on infected computers elsewhere. They said it was campus-wide and that the 'atacks' had come from several computers; either of those could have been PR-talk to placate Users, but even at that, I don't know that CoH is so intense as to take down a University network.

New tactic: I've told them that I need the same ports opened in order to work on my senior design project. My senior design project is supposed to be an application dealing in streaming media over network lines, and when we get to the point that we need ports, I intend to suggest these same ones, just so that I'm not a complete lier. Then, I will try to play CoH durring non-peak hours to reduce strain on the network, if it turns out that it is, in fact, draining resources.
Edit: Seems they linked it to my previous request for CoH. It's only fair, I suppose, but hopefully that won't impair things. At least this time I have a ticket. (Ticket number 50501)

I don't know, we'll see. I REALLY don't think it's my fault, but I tend to worry.
