On Telemarketers

A telemarketer called today.
Well, sorta.
It was one of those people who call around and ask for money. This one was for a Pro-Life group, and it was a girl on the line, and to that I attribute my weakness (both of them t'gether, not just that it was a girl. ^_-)

At first she asked for a donation of $100. Me being a full-time student, I told her I really had no money. But, she asked if, given three weeks, I could come up with a generous donation of $10. I said I'd think about it, at least 1/2 so she would leave me alone (I've been feeling sick t'day, though I'm feeling better). And so I'm getting an envelope in the mail in the next week asking me for $10. And, I'm really not sure if I intend to give them it or not. I mean, it is a cause I believe in, antways, and I'll prolly feel like an ass if I don't do it.

What's $10, anyways?
A pizza. A few nights of Chinese food. A weeks worth of movie rentals. A month's worth of sodas. Approximately 1+1/2 hours of work....

In the end, I'm sure one of two things will happen -
A) I'll do the right thing
2) I'll feel like an ass

The choices I must make.....

Well, when you break it down like THAT, $10 is quite a lot, isn't it? (Hey, I'm flat broke at the moment -- $5 seems like solid gold. ^__^;;;;;;;;;)

Yes, I suppose it does seem quite a bit, but then, I suppose that was the point, wasn't it? But let's think about it - ONE Pizza? That would barely last me an hour, what a rip off. A few nights of Chinese food is more reasonable, but realistically, it would prolly only get me a meal and a half. The movie rentals isn't really that big an exageration, but I'm not sure my roomie's VCR is working (which will royally suck when my Unicorn gets here...) so it's a null point. As for the sodas, a 24 pack is really lucky to last two weeks with me, but then, it only costs about $3.00, so $10 of soda is a nice amount. And we all know what hell Work is.

But if you think about it - all my meals are more-or-less paid for already: I get 15 meals a week from school, prepaid. i don't really need to rent movies, I've got Anime comming outta my EARS right now. The soda would be a nice touch, but only a nice touch - I don't NEED it. And, you'll note, I work 10 or more hours a week, so what's 90min in the grand scheme of things? About $10, I just said that. Try and stay with me.

So, I guess, when crunch time comes, if I HAVE $10, I'll prolly give it. What the hell.

Next time, though, I let the machine get it...

I always screen my calls when I'm home. If you don't talk and let me know it's you, I don't pick up. It weeds out a lot of pointless calls, of course. This morning the answering machine wasn't working - I thought it might be mom, or Beth, or someone important calling me about their life, since I get a lot of those calls... and it turns out to be a bill collecter, all pissed off and very rude/snippy.

Not a cool way to start my day. >_<; So the next time the phone rang and the machine didn't pick up, I just let it go. I'm such a terrible girl. ;_;

I can't stand talking to machines. i have a bunch of friends who screen their calls, be it for telemarketers or what have you, and I just tend not to call them. Granted, I don't like the phone, anyways, but... If I leave you a message it means one of two things - I really want to talk to you, or I specifically want you to know I called - and that's different from whether or not I have something important to say. If I figure I can get ahold of you another way, or later, I will, regardless of what it is I need you for. I can't stand talking to machines.

(I would send you soda save for two things - it'd be really warm and really shaken up
