"People think of the brain as one seamless intelligence, because that's how it feels to us from the inside," says Nancy Kanwisher, an MIT vision researcher. "But if you look at prosopagnosia, you start to realize that the brain may actually be a grouping of stand-alone computational machines that are wired together."

This is fascinating.

Ok, so I think you need to be a 'special' kind of literature-geek to really appreciate This, but maybe not. it's an article Wired did in their magazine, asking current writers to emulate Hemingway's shortest story Some of what they got, sadly, reads at best like newspaper headlines. The ones I consider worst pretty much just make fun of the exercise. But a number (some listed below) come close to Hemmingway's elegance. One of them reminded me of a Snippet I did a while back.

The ones I really liked. )

I was reading the news after lunch (as I'm wont to do) when I came upon a couple headlines -- Viewpoint: A Separate But Equal Ruling for Gay Marriage and Apple, Tear Down This Wall. I haven't read either yet, but it occurred to me that to really grasp the weight those headlines are trying to leverage requires a certain amount of education; I'd hazard to say none of my Little Siblings (which here means the 'second half' from Greg on down) would even know what was being referenced. History and I have never really gotten along (though, Alyce, I do appreciate it more than some of my comments might indicate), but this is a good example of why such knowledge is useful. (Specifically, one can pretty much deduce the content and tone of each article from those two lines alone.)
