jackofallgeeks: (Seriously Though)
1. My username is ____ because ____.
2. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
3. My subtitle is ____ because ____.
4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.

1. My user name is JackOfAllGeeks because... Wow, the story seems like it happened so long ago. I can't remember if I was talking to Alyce or Rachel, or maybe someone else entirely, but I was saying how I was conversant with a whole range of geeks, from band geeks to computer geeks to theatre geeks -- you name it, and I could at least follow a conversation fairly well, and contribute in some way. But I've never considered myself 'masterful' in any domain, even my field of Computer Science. I am, as one might say, "apprentice to many, master of none." A jack of all trades. A jack of all geeks.

2. My journal is titled Terminal_Velocity only because it's the subtitle that's seen on all pages in my layout; I swapped what had been my title and subtitle, so rightly, 'Terminal_Velocity' is my subtitle. It's meant to be polysemantic -- a word I just found meaning "having many meanings," -- referring to both my affinity for computers (and, in using 'terminal,' referring to my apparent preoccupation with the past) and the blinding speed with which my life seems to travel (that is, 'terminal velocity' as the speed at which air-resistance balances gravity in free fall and acceleration ceases). I even included the underscore, which is programming convention for when a variable or function name 'should' contain a space.

3. My subtitle is Do_While(True) because, as noted above, I wanted my 'title' to appear on all my pages. This is a reference to a programming construct. While loops are blocks of code which loop over and over as long as their test condition evaluates to 'true.' A Do_While loop functions in the same way, except that Do_While will always execute at least once, even if it's condition initially evaluates to 'false.' Needless to say, 'true' always evaluates to 'true,' and Do_While(True) will run infinitely. This is in reference to the cyclic nature my life seems to have. To use a quote my cousin Rachel enjoys: "They say life is one damned thing after another, but they're wrong. It's the same damn thing over and over again."

4. My friends' page is called The Company You Keep in reference to the Gaelic proverb, "A man is known by the company he keeps." And it's true. Perhaps you can not know everything about a person by who he associates himself with, but you can certainly learn a lot.

5. My default user pic is a play on The Cogito in green-outlined text over white ones and zeroes on a black background resembling a terminal screen, cursor included, because it is both philosophic and geeky, profound and goofy, much like how I imagine myself.

And there's my little dose of egocentrism for the day. Keeps a man humble, y'know.
jackofallgeeks: (Tears)
I'm scared and I'm tired.
I have two projects due by the 20th. I'd like them done before next Wednesday, because that's when the Quarter ends and I go home.
My C++ program keeps faulting on me, presumably because of pointer issues, but I can't work through it.
I'm too frustrated to even think about my Ada program.
I just want to give up and be done. I don't care any more.

I think I may take tomorrow off from classes to just sit and get things taken care of.
