You know what bothers me?
Churches which have a 'Christ Resurected' above the alter instead of the crucifix.
yeah, you can argue about how the Crucifix is a wholly depressing symbol, and yes the Resurection is a wonderful event.
But that's not the point. If Christ had simply come to raise from the dead, then I'm sure it could have been done much easier, with less fuss. He didn't have to die on a cross to raise from the dead.
The point is that he died for us, and because of that, it should be a great sign of hope and reminder of love - I personally don't find it depressing at all.
Here's my take on it - through the whole Book, God's just looking for true Love, a wholly unselfish kind of love. He comes close with Abraham, who was willing to sacrifice his only son, but that was a willingness to sacrifice someone else for Love. Perhapse heeding the old saying, 'If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself," God came down to earth, tried his darndest to teach us a few things, and then he died on the cross for us. He even said the greatest act Love is to die for your friends.
That's what it's about. It's not about rules or anything - those simply direct to us what true Love really is, and they have no meaning beyond that.
My post, I fear, comes off as very weak (I'm afraid most of my posts, especially as of late, are weak) but it's mainly for this reason that I believe the Meaning Of Life is to Love.
