DEBILITATING HAND CRAMPS
Mar. 9th, 2007 02:53 pmWow. This publishing project sounds pretty interesting. The whole premise is summed up in This episode of Dinosaur Comics -- essentially, there's a machine that will predict the manner in which a person will die. The machine is always right, but it's not always clear. "Old Age" could mean anything from dying after 97 years of life or being shot by a 97-year old man in a botched burglary.
I think it's an interesting writing exercise. They're looking for all sorts of stories centered around what this would would be like; how would individual's lives be affected? How would society be affected? Would people be discriminated against based on Cause of Death? How would people react to learning their fate, or the fates of the ones they love? What about crime and war and law and Hollywood?
The submission early-deadline is March 31st, but they'll accept through April 30th. They're looking for short stories; not too short, but not long, either. You're allowed up to three submissions. I think I'm going to give it a shot; if nothing else, it's a great exercise.
If you're going to apply (and I highly suggest you do), read the whole page to know what their full guidelines and requirements are. It's not much, but it's better to know the target before you spend a lot of time writing.
