Pandora's Vox
Oct. 19th, 2006 10:45 pmSo while I'm not quite as enamoured with it as my brother, I have to admit that he's found a interesting tool, both in theoretical implications and actual application. Pandora is a kind of custom-gown internet radio station(s). Underneath the hood is The Music Genome Project which caregorizes songs (not artists, mind, which is an important distinction) on several hundred criteria. What Pandora does is take a song (or songs or a whole artists, or several artists) from you and based on the attributes of those songs plays other songs you might enjoy, too. And when it plays a song you like (or don't like), you can say so and it'll 'grow' in that direction (or cut that limb from the figurative tree, as the case may be).
I'm being a bit more contrived in my Stations, giving Pandora a single song and then being liberal with my thumbs-down and stingy with my thumbs-up to find the same 'feel' of that song. On top of that, whereas Gene began with a whole Artist he loves, I've given a few songs I really like, and it's notable that some of these are rather abberant in my tastes. Even at that I've found a good number of songs I like from bands I don't know, which makes Pandora pretty much the tool I've been looking for to expand my musical horizons.
My secondary aim was to see how 'unified' of a soundtrack I could build with Pandora, which has yet to be seen; I haven't exactly been focused on that task. I'm also curious to see what she might give me if I tell her multiple songs I like, or a full artist or two. In particular, I may see what happens when I give her very diverse artists -- like Vanessa Carlton, Savatage, and VNV Nation.
But, in short: I like it.
