Aug. 29th, 2006 09:34 amSo, here's the scenario: I have a car. She is here in Virginia with me. I have classes in California starting in January. That's a cross-country drive; it'll be my third or fourth or something. I've always enjoyed them, but I've also always had company (the least was when Dad and I drove the convertible from San Diego to Virginia Beach just the two of us.
The fact of the matter is that there are a bunch of people that I'd like to come with me, and it's a nice opportunity for a road-trip type deal. But there's a few problems. Firstly, classes start on January 4th, which pretty much assures driving through New Year's (unless, maybe, trying to make the transit over the week between Christmas and New Year's). Secondly, I'm only going one-way, which means anyone who comes with me (barring some east-coast buddy moving out west) will have to get a plane one way or the other. And finally, I'll be taking all of my stuff with me, which would leave precious little room in my car for passengers; I've been working under the assumption of one other beside me (and only because I don't think I could make the drive with fewer).
But, I was talking to my mom yesterday and, being much more clever than I, she had a few thoughts that might make this more feasible. The most important one is that if we (my passengers and I) all pitched in to get a trailer (U-Haul or something), then there would be plenty of room inside the car to make it and honest road trip. I don't know what the cost would be, but Bel could take another 3 or 4 passengers no problem, and the more people we have the less it would be per capita.
The other bit is that, having a car, I could ferry people to whichever airport could give them the best deals flying out, to minimize the impact of airfare. My mom wasn't sure, but she said that Jet Blue used to have $99 one-way fares, which is about a third (if not less) of what I paid to come here in the first place (and I'm sure Jet Blue would have fewer 'we screwed up so now you're flight is delayed 18 hours' than what I took).
This is still some months down the line, but I wanted to give everyone a heads-up on it to get gears turning and see about who can and who definitely can't do something like this. There's easily enough people I want to take to fill Bel three times over, but that doesn't mean they all have the time or money to do so.
