Paradygm Shift
Oct. 11th, 2002 03:31 pmI have other things to talk about, but I figure I might as well get this down now -- I've wanted t'post it the past couple of days, but keep putting it off.
Anyways, both yesterday and today I decided to forego my contacts and wear my glasses. Arguably, this hasn't been the brightest of ideas, seeing as it's been raining both days, which means that when leaving a building, I would have to take my glasses off anyways, or be quite blinded by the rain on them.
But, that's what did it, actually. You see, I have really near-sighted vision - I think I was quoted something like 20/400 once (that is, as 20 feet, I see the detail someone else would see at 400 feet). I can function quite easily without visual aid - I can make out shapes, and I have a reasonable ability to recognize people. But I can't drive, definately not, and my vision is definately not 'clear' in any sense.
With all that, it offers a different way of looking at the world. It makes things a bit more surreal, perhaps, and dream-like. At the same time, it's oddly familiar. I didn't get glasses until I was in 5th grade, so I've seen the world in that way for about half my life - a couple years ago it was (obviously) a stronger fraction. ::Shrugs:: Maybe you 20/20s can't quite follow, but...
I suppose, on the one hand, where as some people watch old cartoons to relive their childhood, I wear my glasses (or rather, don't wear them). And on the other hand, it offeres an altered view of the world as I've come to know it.
Comming up the stairs this afternoon, wearing my glasses, it rather struck me just how crisp and clear everything was. Rather like the first time I ever put on glasses. Someone once asked if I'd ever go for that laser surgery, and I've never really liked the idea. But to give this up....? No, the beauty of life truely is in the flaws.
And Now For Something Completely Different
I saw a really good Lain vid to this song. I wonder if I can find it again...
