Sophomoric Oxymoron
Feb. 8th, 2002 09:14 amToday I had my English conference which, for those unfamiliar, is when we miss classes for a week so everyone can talk with the teacher 1-on-1 about their paper. Mine was interesting.
I rather think our teacher's a personable kinda guy, but almost in a reserved kinda way. Other people seem to think he's just impersonal, but hey, whatcha gonna do? Anyways, I went in there, and he said I had a really solid paper, and he kept saying I was a really good writer. He said, though, that for the assignment I was being "over creative" - too poetic for the news article we were supposed to write. ^_^;; He told me he had some people on this level who don't know how to use oxymorons and similes, and he needs to bring them up. I, on the other hand, an up here in that I know how to use them, but use them almost too much. ^_^;;
He asked me what my Major I had, and was visibly surprised when I said CompSci. "Those guys are usually the subject-verb type." Apparently I stick out from the stereotypical computer geek in many ways, ne? He suggested that I look into getting a minor, because CompSci doesn't do much writing, and he'd "hate to see this talent wasted." He asked if I'd been in AP English in Highschool, which was another nope. Along that same line, my CompSci teacher thought I'd been a C-programmer (when I'd never layed my hands on C++). The joys. ^_^;;
Maybe I'll take an English Minor yet. ^_^;; I might be interested in showing this guy more of my work - I always have enjoyed writing, even when it was as mundane and highschool papers and book reports. We'll see.
