The Evil Mathmagician

For those who love math.
For those who hate math.
For those who are unsure what math is.

Did you know that 0.9999999.. on into infinity is equal to 1? No, I don't believe it, either. Or I didn't. Then I saw someone say this:

If x = 0.9999999.., then 10x = 9.9999999.., and (10x - x) = 9. Therefore, 9x = 9 or x = 1.

Weird. But further oddity can be found in this:

Take the set of natural numbers (1, 2, 3, 4..), and then create two other sets, the first by multiplying all natural numbers by two, and the second by crossing out every-other number, starting with 1. The first set clearly has the same number of elements as the set of natural numbers, while the second clearly has only half that number - but both sets are the same (that is, 2, 4, 6, 8...)

The mind boggles.
These two mathmatical oddities come curtacy of PostVixen, and in particularly from Growf. He also mentioned something about the Transfinite, but I haven't looked at that, yet.

YOUR mind boggles?!

Curse you for putting math in your entry, Andrew. Curse you.

Actually, no, it doesn't...

Truth be told, it rather makes perfect sense to me, in a way. I mean, yeah, 10x WOULD be 9.999999.., and I guess if you subtracted 0.999999.. from that, it would be 9, and thus 9x is 9, and divinding through does get x=1. So, yeah, it's only 'logical' that 0.99999999.. equals 1. Doesn't it? O.o

But, looking at my chosen profession, maybe I was destined to crunch numbers. That transfinite stuff, though - that's thick. I think I'm getting through it pretty well, but you have to understand that Math, as such, is very abstract...oooooh, I get excited just thinking about it all.

^^;; I'm such a weirdo.

add, subtract, mulitply, divide...that makes sense...

*beats head into desk several times* I hate math...

Dear God, I have a friend who gets off on numbers... ::joins Raeann in banging her head::

Raeann and Leslie are both hating the Maths, so I must join them. ::bangs head:: I'm not fond of math either - which sucks, because I think Science is pure passion. But the two go hand in hand, and... well.. ::sigh::

Yeah...Math sucks ass. ::giggles at the fact that she, Raeann, and Mel are all banging their heads into things in synch::
