I've never liked 'equality' much.

OK, so, pardon me while I go into jackass mode.

All of my little cousins are getting onto Facebook these days because, and it shocks me every time, they're all in Highschool now. This isn't what's biting me, it's just the vector. My little brother got on recently and, among other things, joined a group descriptively titled "Union." I was disappointed to find it had nothing to do with North/South allegiance in the Civil War (a topic that's been of non-trivial interest to me for a while).

No, instead this group is about 'unity' and 'equality' and everyone being 'just as good' as everyone else. The creator says things like "thinking you're above someone makes you below them" and emphasizes that everyone bleeds when you prick them, and it's always red.

I am a consummate elitist. And part and parcel of that is the fact that I believe I have every right to feel I'm better than a vast number of people. Not everyone, mind you, and I'll be the first to admit that some measures are far more valid than others, but let's be honest with ourselves, yes? Everyone is *not* equal, not in the sense that we're the same. We have commonalities, we all bleed red and (I believe) we all have basic human dignity. But that's the least common denominator. If that's *all* you have going for you, you're in a pretty sorry state.

I believe that all people have the same basic human value and are equally welcome to the love of God... but people are not all equally skillful, talented, intelligent, moral etc. People are the same and are equal in many fundamental ways, but they are also quite different and unequal in others. It's a fact and people should deal with it.

I took the community as being a well-intentioned anti-bigotry group. That said, I'd never ever consider joining such a "holier-than-thou" sort of community.

Common Interests: Philosophy? Pshaw, please. Nothing they discuss in that community is founded on solid philosophical premises ...
