Vocal Bias?

So, a friend of mine just observed that she has a strong bias toward female vocals in music: most of her music features female vocalists and in genres she's not a fan of (she notes Country) she's more forgiving of female vocals. She does like some male vocals, but notes they're a distinct minority.

I've never thought about it, but it occurs to me that I'm just the opposite. Most of the artists I like, particularly the ones I consider my favorites (VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Queensryche, Savatage) have male vocals. Some artists I like feature female back-ups, but none of my favorites. In genres I'm not a particular fan of, I think it's split fairly evenly between male and female vocals, though I think there's a slight bias toward male vocals.

So, now I'm curious: is there any pattern to this?

(After getting so responses, it occurs to me that I should have had "I am mostly attracted to: Men, Women, No One, Everyone Equally" instead of using labels like Straight, Gay, Bi, or the ever-nebulous Other. Ah well, I'll try to keep that in mind next time I'm pigeon-holing sexuality.)

Queensryche. Excellent choice. What do you think of The Scorpions?

The stuff I like tends to be fairly evenly split, perhaps with a very slight male preponderance.

However... with country music in particular (a genre that in general I have a severe aversion to), almost every act that I can occasionally stomach has female vocals. but then, most of the female country musicians that I can stomach seem to have fuzzy genre identification anyhow.

Interesting you ask about The Scorpions -- are they connected in any way other than general style, and possibly time of prominence? I ask because I'd looked them up years ago, about the same time I found Queensryche. I *love* Queensryche. I'm less-so-thrilled by the Scorpions. in particular the songs that stick out to me are "White Dove" and "Winds of Change," which just don't sit right with me.

I imagine you're of a differing opinion?

Just that they're another fairly hard rock group from the same general era, and people I know (such as myself, naturally) that like the one tend to like the other.

White Dove and Winds of Change, interestingly, are quite atypical of the Scorpions' usual sound. I like the latter, not so much the former. Probably my favorite of their tracks is Alien Nation.

Perhaps amusingly, that song has a lot of thematic connections with Empire, my favorite Queensryche track.

Mmm. Maybe I'll have to give them another shot, then. I think it was White Dove that I first heard by them. Following it up with Winds of Change didn't help. I think I liked both a little at one point, but quickly grew tired of them. They really don't fit me at all.

Empires is good. Not my favorite, but good. I'm a big fan of Someone Else, Silent Lucidity, I Don't Believe In Love, and ... Most of the Operation:Mindcrime CD. :p

Silent Lucidity's a great track.

You know, I like how LJ shows you the precentage of the results, but can you run them through a stat program and see if any statistical correlations arise? Specifically I am interested in correlations between gender and perfered gneres

Not as far as I know. I don't think it even tracks users through questions, it just tallies up the responses -- so the only way I have to see what guys are biased is to note which users said they were guys and then see what those users answered for their bias. To get anything statistical out of an LJ-poll you'd have to do the number entry and number crunching yourself.
