Revenge of the Hope?

OK, so this is actually pretty interesting: in light of Episodes I-III, perhapse there was Far More going on in Episode IV than it would at first seem.

(Frankly, I don't count Eps. I-III as canon, but that's because I think they just Mess Things Up.)

Well, that's the funny thing about canonicity: something either is or it is not. Unfortunately, some fan doesn't have the say in what it is. Now, I hate those movies' stories (the visuals are pretty, at least)... but the only man that has final say of what is canon happens to be Lucas (the man that owns the property), and he thinks they're canon.

Do I think they these films screw with the series? Absolutely. do I prefer non-canon approaches to them? Yes. They're still canon.

Canonicity's not a value judgment as far as good or bad.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

*grins* The Mythbusters are huge on trying to enforce, er... something like a canon of reality.

But yeah. Like I said.... I frequently prefer noncanonical takes over the official line. But I do feel it's important to know the difference.

Oh, I agree that it's good to know the difference. Call me a Star Wars Protestant, if you will; I think 'their' canon is just wrong. Granted, most Protestants wouldn't try to rewrite the Bible, given the chance, but I'd like to try and take a crack, one day, at writing my own 'how it all happened' story.

Same goes for the Magic: The Gathering storyline, though I think they've generally done a much better job than Lucas. I'd only change a few things, and flesh out a few others. At least Wizards never reduced magic to blood parasites...

Reminds me of my spin on the Warhammer world.

Though in my defense, my deviations mostly begane before a lot of that world's metaplot was firmly established. I had already developed my own spin and then their version started careening wildly in a different direction. I was old and crusty enough to spit upon their silliness and carry on my merry way.

Emperor Karl-Franz Holswig-Schliestein is suddenly a mighty warrior and the greatest statesman in the Old World? What? The earlier sources universally describe him as an eccentric nut that got the job only because the rest of the Electors regarded him as the candidate least likely to rock their balance of power...

Never mind what I did to Bretonnia.
