Magic: The Obsession

I love these cards. After a couple days of fruitless deck building, it becomes a little stale. But it only takes flipping through a few cards (mostly Odyssey and Torment, my new favorite sets) to re-Kindle my excitement for the game.

Through and through, I'm a Black Mage. That's why I've taken so readily to Torment - it's just so Black. Flipping through my black cards - Filthy Cur, Mindslicer, Fledgeling Imp, Grave Theft - it's just amazing. Sure, Red Burn is always fun to play, and i'm a great fan of Blue Control. No one could possibly pass up Green Fatties and, though generally a much too passive color for me, White Weenies, and sometimes White Nutshell, can be fun, too.

But, I am a Black Mage. Graveyard Recursion has always been my best friend. No one kills creatures quite like Black does, and what it can't do 'In Flavor', it can pay for. Whatever you need, Black has - if you can pay the price.

I think I want to make a Black-Blue deck, but I'm not sure were to go. I want to make a Black-Red deck, but I don't know where to start.

In any case, I want someone to play against, just to see my decks in action.

I wish I could be of some help to you on this one, but I always just kinda stuck what I thought were my best cards together when I made my blue-black and green-white decks. Whether or not they really were my best cards, I'll never know... ^_^ Good luck with it.

The other day, I had vague ideas about playing Magic again. Then I remembered that, as fun as it was to utterly dessimate some of my opponents, I never really enjoyed/was any good at the thing. ^_^

Ah, my friend, you misunderstand. You don't have to be good at something to enjoy it. For example - all those 'writers' on fanfic.net. I'm sure they enjoy it, but it would be a long, bloody argument before I consented that they were any good at it. Or soccer. I played soccer for some 10 years, and never once scored a goal. Maybe, MAYBE, you could argue that I was good on defense, but that's not the point.

I fear I turn off anyone who I could even get to think of playing. I've been doing this for seven-odd years now, I think (I started in '94 or '95 or something) and so I have a fair amount of experience under my belt. Also, since it's how I learned to play, I still think the best way is to just jump into the fray, cards in hand, and lose. Repeatedly. And, when you start making connections between cards, and understanding how they work together, that's when you get onto your feet. I donno.

I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy it because I wasn't any good at it. I just didn't really enjoy it for anything more than, to risk sounding insanely shallow, the pretty pictures (Gawd, I just said that). Like with Ani-Mayhem. I never really got into that for any more than just the fact that it dealt with anime.

Pictures...

Yes, I admit I got into it because of the pretty pictures and hilarious quotes ^_^. I would sit for hours flipping through the thousands of cards my brother has...

YES! I was insanely fond of the "Serra Angel" card, just 'cause the lady was SO PRETTY.

I admit, the art is very enticing - I'd be lieing if I said it meant nothing to me. Magic is a very visual game, and I get the most enjoyment from envisioning the players - the two great Wizards - flinging spells and commanding creatures. Hence the birth of Rolias Noom, and my years-long fixation with trying to capture Magic in literary form.

My favorite art is slightly different from you ladies. While I'll admit that Serra was always a good friend of mine, the Shivan Dragon definately took dominance, and my favorite cards would flow along the lines of 7th's Pestilence, Ice Age's Krovikan Vampire, and of course my Legends - Ertai, The Corrupted, Commander Greven il-Vec, Ertai, Wizard Adept, and my love, Mirri, Cat Warrior. Just, of course, to name a few - I'm a great lover of art.
