A Rose By Any Other Name Would Still Be Me

So I've been thinking for a long while that Rolias Noom needs to retire. He started out as an alias for gaming with my brothers, then grew into a semi-developed character concept while I role-played in AOL's Red Dragon Inn, durring it's twilight years. From there he became a more-developed character for a story I wanted to tell, and eventually he became me. I've been Roliasnoom for years now, but...

-shrugs- It's almost like I've grown out of it. I kind of want to, I don't know, have a change or something. Not that I have anything against RoliasNoom, it just feels... 'childish' isn't the right word. But he feels like he's from another chapter in my life which is coming to a close, if not already a few pages back.

Anyways, I have my own preferences in the following list, but I want your opinions. Assuming I do change my digital persona, I may go about getting this Journal renamed -- they can do that I hear, though there may be a charge... anyways...

I switched names, you'll need to reAdd me as JackOfAllGeeks. Tell Becky and Brittany, too -- I don't have emails for them.

I also like "wfflingjaberwocky". I've been meaning to ask why a guy would decide to choose as his username an obvious mirrortext of sailormoon. :)

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
See, normally, I would disavow and knowledge of that, and wave away any resemblance as pure coincidence. A very thin story indeed, but hey, we all play games. *laughs*

As I said, it started way back in Highschool or something when me and my brothers were playing fantasy-type games, and I 'needed' a name for my 'character' -- I didn't really need one, and it wasn't really much of a character. I'm not sure who suggested it, probably me, as mirroring matches my modus operandi at the time. And yeah, I watched Sailor Moon as an Adolescent. Sue me. It was then as it is now a horrid piece of cole-slaw as far as entertainment goes, but it had girls in short skirts, and I was 14 -- I think that speaks more-or-less for itself.

Anyways, when we had Rolias Noom, it had a nice sorta ring to it, and it stuck -- for years, actually, because I'm something of a creature of habit, and resistant to change in a lot of ways. It's fit all the way until now, but now I think I want something different.

I don't know you.

;) <j/k>

FWIW though, def change the name. XD

Hey, I changed the name, and you'll have to reAdd me.

[identity profile] quix.livejournal.com 2004-06-24 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Done. Strange when others changed their username I didn't have to refriend them. I wonder what they did different.

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-24 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Rather, it's what I did differently. For a number of reasons I wanted to cut ties with RoliasNoom as a Journal -- certain hangers-on who I'd just as soon not have looking over my shoulder, and the fact that a lot of Spam was flowing in through my livejournal mail (my own fault, of course). By default, they keep all your Friends list and Friends Of lists intact, and forward references to your old journal direct to your new journal -- in that case, all my lists would stay the same and anything looking for RoliasNoom would get to JackOfAllGeeks.

Uhm, short story long, I told them to cut all my 'Friends Of' ties and not to forward RoliasNoom to me -- which means that in a month he'll be open for some teenaged girl to pick up, as opposed to permanently being attached to me.

I disregarded the first choice for that is for you to decide. I proceeded as if you ARE going to change. I waffled back and forth between AndrewInDigital and JackofallGeeks. I decided Jack because it doesn't have your real name in it, although why that was a deciding issue, I am unsure.

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee hee, smart girl, though there may be someone who thinks I really should be Roliasnoom. I'm not sure I'd pay them much mind, unless there was overwhelming support for the idea.

Andrew and Jack are actually my top two choices -- I just registered them today. I think I want to keep Joe as my 'workname,' and much as I like the Jabberwocky, I'm not sure it's quite the tone I'm looking for...

As for Andrew being, well, my name... -shrugs- I can kind of see the sense in concealing my identity in that small way, but I'm not sure it'd make much difference, being who I am. Not to say Andrew has a lead over Jack -- after all, I am skilled in many but master of none.

[identity profile] photoholic62.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't thinking of concealing your identity, really. Especially since it's pretty obvious on a quick look through your journal that you are Andrew David Portner. I was just thinking of different from every-day, maybe. Oh, who knows what I was thinking?

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-24 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hey Dawn -- I changed my name and cut ties to Rolias. You'll needa reFriend me.

[identity profile] photoholic62.livejournal.com 2004-06-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I gotcha added back. Thanks for the head's up! I woulda missed ya!

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm afraid most will. I cut my ties to clean up a few little knots, ad now i'm working to 'rebuild' my Friends list. Only 27 more...

[identity profile] starlight1184.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you should use JoeSchmoeAtWork as your normal name, and I'm not a fan of the Jaberwocky one. Go for the other ones. :-)... I think I'm leaning towards AndrewInDigital... but I don't know. Have a good night dear!

[identity profile] jackofallgeeks.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I weant to keep Joe as a workname, and I don't know if Jaberwocky's the tone I'm looking for... We'll see if Jack or Andrew pull out in the end.

[identity profile] aiglet.livejournal.com 2004-06-23 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been using the same screen name since I first signed on to AOL about 11 years ago (wow, I feel old now), and I've never really even considered changing it.

Why do you find this one name so associated with a chapter of your history? Did the name not grow with you?

[identity profile] naughtjennifer.livejournal.com 2004-06-26 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I can sympathize with you dropping Rolias. I myself have grown out of NaughtJennifer, and much more readily associate myself with Shinyarinka. I may even leave this name and rebuild my LJ name myself, simply because this journal's done nothign constructive, and I'm becoming more and more distant from this alias.

So, on a name by name basis . . .

Rolias - I can respect that you've grown out of it. If it's no longer you, then I see no reason to keep it.

Joe - This is a work name. It tells people who know its nature that you are in a different state than your normal name. Keep it, but keep it as a work name.

In Digital - When I see this name, I don't think you. I actually think of "Fiction," by Orgy, which in turn makes me think of Reilynn, but that's another story entirely. It's an interesting name, but not what I'd associate with you.

'wocky - I know another 'wock, so that's a blow right there. Furthermore, though 'wocky is awesome and all, you will be forevermore associated with Lewis Carroll(sp?). Though acceptable as an alternate persona(heck, you even have a good away message), this can't be you simply because you have very tenuous ties to Carroll.

Jack - Out of the choices, this most suits you. You refer to yourself as such, you act as such, and the image it creates is, put simply, you.

I realize that this may be late, but I might as well toss in my own two escudo.
