It's a series of six lines, really, two sets. The first set is "Talked with Emily the other day. I rather like her, yes'm. The sky is blue." The first line is the setup, the second the conclusion, and the third a logical connection to The World At Large. In this case, it's all rather obvious, no?
The second set is the one you refer to, "Talked with Nancy the other day. I think we may yet have a decent friendship. The fingerprints of koala bears are nearly indistinguishable from humans'." Setup, conclusion, connection; in this case, apparently it's a fact, but no one would have ever guessed it.
And I suppose to explain further: I've been back in touch with Nancy, we've written a few emails back and forth, and there's actually been a bit of substance there. So... -shrugs- There you have it.
