Echos of The Past
"Because you just don't do that." He said, straining to express something that was so obvious, so clear.
"Because you don't pick away at someone like that. Because you wouldn't want someone to do it to you. Because it's not something that's easy to take..." His voice sombered, dropping to a lower resonance, and his eyes got a far-away look to them.
"And, you know, it's not that anyone ever cares. It's not like they haven't had to put up with it their whole life -- if it could be changed, don't you think it wouldn've been by now? And that doesn't mean you don't try, but they don't know you, and they'll never know you. It's not like they'll ever even see you again!" He gestured wide to emphasize the remoteness of it all. His voice carried defiance, but pain showed in his eyes. Loneliness.
"It's not like you don't feel out-of-place as it is. It's not like it's not difficult enough meeting new poeople -- especially people who you like, and who you want to like you. If I don't care about someone, it doesn't matter what they say. But if there's someone who shines, someone who would be worth knowing... And even when I don't care, it hurts."
-Yeah, his laugh was really starting to get to me-
You don't do that, because even when they don't hear, they'll find out. Even when it can't touch them, it will. Ad the scorn of those we admire is the sharpest cut.
