Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I'll be toasting to you.

In other news, I owe my brother Gene a bit of thanks: you see, he's indirectly earned me a free Irish Carbomb.

Remember that post I did on the new Magic set, and how I loved the Yixlid Jailer? It came up the other night at Denny's, after FNM. Without getting into the gory details, Rob claimed that Yixlid beat this other card, Dralnu. Gene and I had previously had a short discussion on Yixlid v. Dralnu, and he convinced me that timestamping provides that dralnu wins. So, I argued against Rob.

Now, Rob's a good player. He has stupid-good luck in Drafts and a better-than-decent understanding of deckbuilding. He makes some play mistakes (like scooping to a Slipstream Serpent because he thought it had Islandwalk, not Islandhome), but he's a good player. Unfortunately, he's a bit over-confident, particularly when he argues rules, particularly when he argues rules against me; which is folly on his part, because while I make more play mistakes than him and I can barely cobble together a playable deck, I know rules.

Long story short, we put a wager on it: if Yixlid wins, I buy him a Carbomb; if Dralnu wins, he buys me one. Since then, pertinent discussions on the MtG message boards have backed me up.

I should have upped the ante to two Car Bombs. I love those things.
