Of Music and Consumerism

I need coffee (really need it). We don't even have instant stuff here. *cries*

Last night I picked up several boxes that had come in from Amazon -- Nine of the Ten CDs I ordered came in. Yes, I ordered CDs, which is more significant than some of you might guess. The ones that came in include (and are limited to): 'Contempt' by Assemblage 23, 'Almost Human' by Voltaire, 'Twentysomething' by Jamie Cullum, 'Futureperfect' by VNV Nation, 'United States of Mind' by Covenant, 'Greatest Hits' by Queensryche, 'Greatest Hits Vol1' and 'Greatest Hits Vol2' by Queen, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos Numbers 1 & 3. The last one I'm waiting for is 'Document' by Assemblage 23, which is a CD of remixes (I'm a big fan of remixes and covers in general). Combined with 'Ethernaut' and 'Fortress in Flames' by the Cruxshadows, I have bought more CDs in the last month than I have in the last eight years.

Generally, I've found that CDs these days are over-priced, have too few tracks on them, and most of the songs are out-and-out poor. It would not have been uncommon, in times past, for me to get a CD by a band I liked the sound of, only to find two or three of the twelves songs to be any good at all. On a whim not long ago, I bought a CD of techno-type music; I only knew one of the songs on the list, but it was a song I loved and I at least recognized the other bands on it. I found that, aside from that one track, thought, it was complete trash.

I have a little concern for some of these CDs, particularly Voltaire and Jamie Cullum, as they're mostly-unknown quantities; I bought their CDs because I know I like a few of their songs each, and I figure they're worth a shot if nothing else. But I feel really good about VNV Nation, pretty good about Covenant and Queen, and fairly certain of Assemblage 23 and Queensryche.

So, I think I'm on my way to building up something of a CD collection again. As might be assumed from the eclectic assortment listed, I have rather varied tastes. Other bands I think I may look into purchasing include Linkin Park, Peter Gabriel, Savatage, Muse, Vertical Horizon, BNL, and maybe even Mars Volta or Funker Vogt (those last two are really-unknown quantities). We'll see what happens.
